"A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time." — Henry Ford

⭐ Ad Hit or Had It?⭐
Yes, we know, we're talking about Lionel Messi one more time (we promise this is the last World Cup-adjacent mention... for a while). Michelob ULTRA's Tab Closed aims to celebrate the end of Messi's legendary international career by "closing his tab." As a bar receipt printer slowly rolls out a 20-year list of career achievements, the brand attempts to toast one of soccer's greatest icons. The idea is clever. The execution? Not quite. | Michelob ULTRA: Tab Closed — ⭐⭐ (More Foam Than Flavor)WHY IT WORKS: A Smart Creative Hook: The "closing your tab" metaphor is simple, memorable, and naturally fits a beer brand. Messi Does the Heavy Lifting: A 20-year résumé of championships and records is inherently emotional. The audience's connection to Messi carries much of the storytelling. WHY IT MISSED THE MARK: A Great Print Idea, Not a Great Film: Watching a receipt printer spit out paper for nearly a minute doesn't create much visual momentum. The concept would have been far more impactful as a print ad, billboard, or social graphic than as a video. More Transaction Than Tribute: Framing one of the greatest careers in sports history as an itemized receipt unintentionally makes the farewell feel clinical instead of emotional. It celebrates the accomplishments, but not the human behind them. The Brand Takes a Back Seat: Beyond the bar setting, Michelob ULTRA is surprisingly absent. Instead of making the beer part of the celebration, the ad leaves the brand feeling like an observer rather than the host of the toast. THE VERDICT: Great insight. Clever metaphor. But memorable campaigns need more than a smart idea; they need emotion, movement, and a brand that earns its place in the story. This one had the ingredients, but never quite brought them together. |
